About the location
Proudly awarded the ‘Best Kept Village in Wiltshire’ award in 2024, Urchfont is a vibrant and welcoming village with a strong sense of community.
Centred around a beautiful duck pond, Urchfont is certainly picturesque but it is also home to the historic charm of St Michael & All Angels Church that dates back to the thirteenth century, many listed thatched cottages and Wiltshire’s finest scarecrow festival. A real highlight of the village social calendar, this fun-filled weekend is an unforgettable showcase of Urchfont’s community spirit and creativity, featuring impressive scarecrow displays, local food & drink and entertainment for the whole family.
The Lamb Inn is a traditional pub, well supported by the villagers, that offers locally sourced, seasonal food, real ales as well as a warm, cosy atmosphere. Locals are also encouraged to get together at many of the different clubs such as bell ringing, art, sewing, photography and the Urchfont Players are always on the lookout for new amateur dramatic performers to get involved in the highly entertaining annual pantomime.
The village offers a rich array of clubs, outings and activities to suit all ages and interests.
From the popular cricket club to gardening clubs and a lively village hall hosting regular events, there’s always something happening in Urchfont.
Beyond the village, the countryside is dotted with beautiful woods and the breathtaking landscape of Salisbury plain provides extensive views and endless adventures, whether you stick to the footpath or explore beyond the beaten track. Perfect for those who love spending time in nature and enjoying the great outdoors. Dogs love it too. Just a short drive from the village is Roots Farm Shop, a popular destination for meeting with friends or shopping for fresh produce and artisan goods.
When it comes to location, Urchfont’s idyllic rural setting provides the peace and tranquillity of country living but is still able to offer the efficient connectivity that appeals to commuters. The village offers easy access to the A342 and A360, providing links to the M4 and M3 motorways. The nearby rail stations at Pewsey and Westbury provide train services to London Paddington, Bath, Bristol and the south coast, making Urchfont a practical choice for those seeking an escape to the country without losing those crucial links to the city.
Urchfont is also ideally situated for exploring some of Wiltshire’s most iconic tourist attractions. The historic market town of Devizes and impressive Caen Hill Locks on the Kennet & Avon Canal are just down the road. Slightly further afield, the world-famous Stonehenge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws visitors from around the world and the equally fascinating Avebury Stone Circle offers an even more immersive, open-access experience of ancient Britain. The charming city of Salisbury, with its magnificent cathedral and vibrant arts scene, is also within easy reach either by car or there is a reliable bus service from the village.
For family days out, Longleat Safari Park, Bowood House & Gardens and Lacock Abbey, a National Trust property and filming location for numerous period dramas and Hollywood films, are all close enough for a memorable day trip.
When it comes to location, Urchfont offers the perfect dose of countryside charm, where you can enjoy laid-back living alongside a spirited social scene, as well as plenty of opportunities to explore the best of Wiltshire and beyond.
